Unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons or a mixture thereof with a further olefinic hydrocarbon are polymerized in an inert solvent in the presence of vanadium tetrachloride or oxychloride (VOCl3) as catalyst. The reaction may be carried out at -110 DEG to +100 DEG C. using 0.1-10% of catalyst and at least 0.1% mol. of an aromatic hydrocarbon or derivative thereof as promoter, e.g. naphthalene. The polymers may be derived from styrene, indene, a -methylstyrene or cyclopentadiene, or from a mixture of styrene and isobutylene, indene, cyclopentadiene 2-methylbutene -1 or -2, propylene, or 4-methylpentene-1. The solvent may be an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon which may be halogenated.
