A pharmaceutical composition comprises a herpes simplex virus (HSV) polypeptide and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The polypeptide is an UL47 protein or fragment comprising amino acids 289-298, 548-557, 550-559, 551-559 and/or 551-561 or UL47. Also described is a polynucleotide that encodes a polypeptide of less than 100 amino acids in length comprising those amino acids and compositions comprising the polynucleotide. The polypeptide or an antigen presenting cell modified to present an epitope comprising amino acids 289-298, 548-557, 550-559, 551-559 and/or 551-561 or UL47 can be used for treating or preventing HSV infection.
