PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which an operation of an optical unit at the initial stage and the returning time are accelerated by enabling the position of the optical unit to be detected at any time. SOLUTION: Prior to an operation of reading an original set on an original platen 1, the length X2 of a base of a triangle crossed and formed by the optical unit 3 located in a present position P2 is calculated by a length calculating means, and a distance Y2 from the present position P2 of the optical unit 3 to the home position PO corresponding to the calculated length X2 is calculated by a distance calculating means, and then, a control of returning the optical unit 3 to the home position PO is performed by a position control means based on the calculated distance Y2.
