PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terminal device and a character input method for it capable of inputting a character string by means of a rotational operation element without using a numeric keypad. SOLUTION: A portable terminal device 100 is provided with a jog dial 104, which includes the rotational operation element capable of turning in the normal/reverse directions endlessly, and a display part 103. The jog dial 104 and the display part 103 are arranged on a main surface of an upper casing 102 and always exposed to the outside whether both casings are opened or closed. In input of a character, input candidate characters are renewed and displayed in a predetermined order every time when the rotaion element is turned in one direction by a predetermined quantity, and when the rotational operation element is turned in the other direction, the input candidate character displayed in the display part 103 at that time is decided as an input character. By turning the rotational operation element in the normal/reverse direction, renewed display of the input candidate characters is switched to be displayed in the ascendent/descendent order.
