<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of efficiently receiving data, using a plurality of communication means. <P>SOLUTION: The printer includes a card controller 53 for controlling a plurality of connected physical devices 55, and an application part 51 that accesses the plurality of physical devices 55 via the card controller 53. The plurality of physical devices 55 include an input/output device which communicates, in accordance with a predetermined communication protocol, and a recording device for storing data. The printer has an I/ODH 52a which, if the physical device is recognized as being the input/output device, allocates the physical device as a logical device that can communicate with an external device, with this allocation information being reported to the application part 51.
