A helical press separates long fibers from liquid discharged as industrial waste. The helical press is located within a horizontal cylinder having an inlet with a cylindrical transition to a rod sieve. The cylindrical transitional zone has an array of narrow slits set at an angle to the rotating helical blades. The slits are 4 to 6 mm deep and are linked by cross-pieces 5-20 mm wide. The slits and helical blade combine to reduce the length of fibers prior to pressing.
