Machine for applying a liquid or pasty coating product onto the surface of a moving web

In a paper or carton coating process with a highly viscous medium, the viscous medium is released from a headbox elongated transverse slit onto a rotating drum, or to form a veil which falls on the moving web. Surplus medium arising e.g. from a web-tear is retained in a transverse trough trap. The headbox and/or drum are coupled to a sideways lift/lower jack that raises the unit clear when a web-tear occurs. In normal operation the transverse trough trap is fixed in situ, preventing spillage. In the non-operating position the discharge headbox moves to a second position in the same direction as the moving web. In the normal operating position the coating system operates in conjunction with an air boundary layer abstraction screen.
