Chymotrypsin B is obtained from a pancreatic extract obtained by acid hydrolysis by a multi-stage process including the precipitation of impurities by addition of (NH4)2SO4, precipitation of the required material in the same way, contacting an aqueous solution thereof with a cation-exchange resin, e.g. C.M.C., eluting, reprecipitating the required material, reactivating by treatment with trypsin preferably in the presence of calcium ions, repeating the treatment with a cation exchange resin and freeze-drying the eluate.ALSO:Compositions useful for treating bronchopulmonary infections, traumatic lesions, thrombophlebitis and other infection and conditions comprise chymotrypsin B in purified form (see Division C3). They may be in conventional forms suitable for topical, oral, parenteral, and rectal administration or for inhalation.
