Homopolymers of ethylene and copolymers of ethylene with another alpha-olefin, are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a solid catalyst including vanadium or titanium trihalide (but excluding fluorides), and active free-radicals generated at the surface of or in the vicinity of the solid catalyst, from diazomethane. The catalyst may include an aluminum trihalide, and the V or Ti trihalide may be prepared in situ from a V or Ti tetrahalide and an aluminium alkyl. Specified other alpha-olefins are propylene and butene-1. The polymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon medium. The vanadium or titanium trihalide may be ball-milled
