PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more reliably detect a particular pattern included in a multivalued image where background density varies from place to place depending on illuminating conditions and the like. SOLUTION: The first one of a plurality of thresholds arranged in order as thresholds for binarizing the multivalued image is selected. The multivalued image is binarized according to the selected threshold to create a binary image. A partial image similar to a predefined standard pattern is detected from the binary image created. To prevent the detected similar partial image from being detected in a subsequent step for detecting the similar image, the multivalued image and the similar partial image in the binary image are masked. Further, information indicating the similar partial image is outputted as a detection result. In a selection step, the plurality of thresholds following the one threshold are selected sequentially, and each time one of the following thresholds is selected, subsequent processes are repeated according to the threshold selected.
