PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for electropolishing the surface of stainless steel, in which the bath contains a minimal amount of a neutral salt of fluoride that adversely affects the human body, by employing additives for remarkably improving corrosion resistance of stainless steel with a slight amount of addition. SOLUTION: The electropolishing method comprises: employing an electrolytic solution containing one or more combined compounds selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, and a sodium salt, a potassium salt and an ammonium salt thereof, in an amount of 1 wt.% or more, and chromic fluoride to be added: and electrolyzing the stainless steel to be treated with an alternating current while sandwiching a sheet of permeable nonwoven fabric between the stainless steel and an electrode.
