PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laminated film which has heat resistance/high gas barrier performance and shows a small difference in the coefficient of linear exapsion from an adjacent layer, and an image display element which uses the laminated film as a substrate and shows high definition/durability. SOLUTION: This laminated film with gas barrier properties has a gas barrier layer composed of an inorganic thin film layer and an overcoat layer, formed on a base material film containing an inorganic compound, preferably a metal oxide obtained by hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction under a sol-gel process.
