<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small personal identification device that uses human biological information as means for identifying individuals. <P>SOLUTION: Light from a lighting unit 5 is applied to a finger 1. The light transmitted through the finger 1 is imaged by an imaging apparatus 3 and an authenticating part 4 performs personal identification. A lightguide member 2 is positioned between the lighting unit 5 and the finger 1 to cause the light emitted from the lighting unit 5 to be applied from the transverse direction of the finger 1 or a direction perpendicular to the optical axis of the imaging means. The lightguide member 2 has reflecting surfaces A, B and a translucent surface C.
