PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excessive play preventing structure of a steering column which can reduce a cost by reducing the number of components and improving an installation property and can prevent the generation of a slapping sound. SOLUTION: In the excessive play preventing structure of the steering column, a cylindrical movable jacket 5 is slidably engaged with an outer cylindrical housing 2 fixed to the vehicle body side, and the steering column formed by connecting a steering wheel to the end of a steering shaft turnably disposed in the movable jacket 5 is prevented from generating an excessive play with respect to the outer cylindrical housing 2 of the movable jacket 5. Three rectangular holes 27 and 28 are axially formed in the outer cylindrical housings 2, the pressing member 29 is engaged with both the rectangular holes 27, and the pressing member 29 is energized to press the pressing member 29 to the outer peripheral surface of the movable jacket 5 by a leaf spring 30 fixed by a screw 31 screwed to a screw part 28a of a central cylindrical hole 28.
