PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave device for improving characteristics outside the pass band. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave device includes a piezoelectric substrate 5, at least one inter-digital transducer (IDT) 3 thereon, and a shield electrode 2 provided on the piezoelectric substrate 5. A first pattern 6 is formed at an edge of the IDT 3 located opposite to the shield electrode 2. A second pattern 7 is formed at the edge of the shield electrode 2 so that each length between the first pattern 6 and the edge of the shield electrode 2 becomes equal. At the same time, it is so constituted that the vector strength of unnecessary excitation generated between the shield electrode 2 and the edge of the IDT 3 becomes zero in total.
