<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device having excellent color reproducibility by eliminating color unevenness, in the backlight device having LED elements as a light source. <P>SOLUTION: In an optical unit 61, a dichroic mirror (B) transmitting green light Lg and red light Lr and reflecting blue light Lb, a dichroic mirror (G) transmitting blue light Lb and red light Lr and reflecting green light Lg and a dichroic mirror (R) transmitting blue light Lb and green light Lg and reflecting red light Lr are disposed so as to transmit or reflect light emitted from LED elements 11B, 11G and 11R to perform color mixing and formation of white light Lw.
