A vertical drawing process, comprises continuously supplying a glass cylinder containing a vertical heating tube (1), to a heating zone (3), adjusting the cylinder axis with respect to the tube longitudinal axis, softening the glass cylinder, drawing the softened glass, and cutting. Adjustment is carried out by determining a value for a primary cylinder axis (16) radial xy-position in a primary horizontal plane. The glass cylinder (4) is drawn to a test piece (10). The actual radial dimensions are then measured, along with the deviation from the actual value. A corrected xy position is then calculated. The cylinder is then located so its axis is in the primary horizontal position.
