PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain higher recording density of a recording medium with a recording layer having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. SOLUTION: The recording medium X1 has a laminated structure comprising a substrate S1, a recording layer 11 which has the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and bears a recording function, a 1st underlayer 21 positioned in the space between the substrate S1 and the recording layer, a primary layer 22 which has bigger surface tension than the 1st underlayer 21 and is in contact with the side of the recording layer 11 in the 1st underlayer 21, and a functional layer 23 in contact with the side of the the recording layer 11 in the primary layer 22.
