The system has an x-ray source (110) continuously moving along a linear path (200). The source transmits x-ray radiation through a region of object (130). A motion controller (120) continuously moves the source along the path relative to object. An x-ray detector (150) detects the transmitted radiation and acquires an x-ray image data. A processing unit (170) processes the image data into a tomosynthesis image of the region. The x-ray source is positioned a predetermined distance from the object. The motion controller is coupled to the x-ray source. The x-ray detector is positioned at a predetermined distance from the x-ray source and the processing unit is coupled to the x-ray detector. An independent claim is also included for a method of generating a tomosynthesis image of a region of an object.
