A counter-stroke forging machine includes a pair of hydraulically actuated rams 1 and 2 which move towards and away from one another along guide strips 3 and 4, the strips including parallel prismatic guide surfaces 11, 12 (Fig. 2) which co-operate with corresponding grooves in the two rams. The strips include central portions without the prismatic guide surfaces, in order to allow the rams to be inserted within the machine perpendicularly to the forging direction, and are held to the one-piece frame 5 of the machine by screws 9 and bolts 10. Each ram is also guided by means of extensions 5<SP>1</SP> which slide in bearings carried by cylindrical housings 7.
