<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motion vector detecting apparatus capable of detecting a motion vector for a plurality of block sizes with a high efficiency by reducing a computational complexity without much deteriorating searching accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: In detecting a motion vector by using first to n-th block sizes for searching units, a first block size motion searching unit 4 detects the motion vector as to each block by using a plurality of blocks of a minimum first block size for units. A feature value extraction unit 6 detects feature values (center vector of the motion vector, inter-vector distance, and variance or the like) between adjacent blocks. A motion searching discrimination unit 7 uses the feature values to discriminate whether or not a motion is to be searched by the second to n-th block sizes. A searching center generator 8, a searching range generator 9, and a selection block size motion searching unit 10 select the second to n-th block sizes to detect the motion vector. A block size determining unit 11 finally determines the block sizes whereby the motion vector is detected with a high efficiency. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
