The method involves determining a first operating size for the manipulation of a driving control element such as an accelerator. The vehicle remains unaccelerated, if a no-load operation condition dependent on the determined first operating size is fulfilled. A second operating size is determined, using a brake where the no-load operation condition depends on the determined second operating size. An independent claim is included for a device for the prevention of unintentional accelerations of a vehicle.
