PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine evaluating method capable of surely evaluating an engine with a simple construction, and the engine-evaluating apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The engine-evaluating apparatus includes a vibration sensor 2 for detecting the vibration of an engine 1 during rotation; a square-processing section 13 for square processing the detected vibration signal; an envelop-processing section 14 for envelope-processing square-processed waveforms; a crank angle calculating section 12; a database section 15 that stores the output signal of the envelope-processing section 14, when the engine 1 is in a reference normal state, as reference data, and also stores an allowable accumulated value range of the difference in amplitudes, between the output signal and the reference data indicating the allowable normal range of the engine 1; and an evaluation section 16 that calculates the accumulated value of the difference in amplitude between the output signal of the envelope-processing section 14 and the reference data stored in the database section 15, and then evaluates the engine 1, based on the comparison between the accumulated value and allowable accumulated value range stored in the database section 15.
