[Also in Divisions B5 and B7] Lightweight plane or curved construction elements, e.g. for vehicles, boat hulls, prefabricated houses or furniture, consist of a hard foam plastics core covered on each side by a layer of synthetic resin reinforced with glass fibre netting or matting. As shown, the core is assembled from a number of parts by inserting ribbons 6 of resin-impregnated glass fibre netting or matting between profiled adjacent edge surfaces. Individual construction elements are joined by overlapping the outer layers and inserting a ribbon in, for example, the C- shape shown; alternatively a spliced joint, as at 8, may be used. The reinforced joints are preferably located at points of high stress. When used as e.g. walls, the ribbons may be dovetail shaped to serve as a means of attaching the wall to the base plate (Fig. 5). Grooves or channels may be pressed in the elements to accommodate pipes or cables. The elements may be produced in moulds by applying to each surface of the mould a parting layer of wax and a gel coat of resin, and then applying successive layers of glass fibre netting or matting and polyester or epoxy resin. The pressing process may be achieved by means of an inflatable pressure pad interposed between the layers. After hardening, the pressure pad is replaced by the foam core, the surfaces of which have been coated with resin, the ribbons are then inserted and pressure is applied.</p> |
