PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leak detection method capable of performing quickly and surely the leak detection of a radioactive fluid together with the specification of a leak spot. SOLUTION: In a facility for handling a radioactive material wherein vessels 2, 11, 13 and pipes therefor 3a, 3b, 12a 12b, 14a, 14b are installed in a sealed compartment 1, and the radioactive fluid is treated by each vessel 2, 11, 13, a radiation detector 6 comprising anα-ray detector or an X-ray detector is provided in a filter 5 provided on an exhaust duct 4 or on its periphery. When anα-nuclide included in the radioactive fluid leaking in the compartment 1 is transferred in the form of fine splash or powder to the exhaust duct 4 and collected by the filter 5,αnuclear species are detected by the radiation detector 6, and a detection result is analyzed and compared with reference data of the kind, the concentration or the like of the radioactive material in the vessels or the pipes confirmed beforehand, to thereby estimate a vessel and/or a pipe having a high possibility of the occurrence of a leak therefrom.
