PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing type steering column device capable of stabilizing the amount of energy absorption using a simple and low-cost structure. SOLUTION: The shock absorbing type steering column device is equipped with a break-away bracket 41 holding a steering column and installed in such a way as capable of moving away to ahead of the vehicle relative to one part of the vehicle body when the load exceeds a certain specified value, and a U-form energy absorbing plate 71 installed at the front end of the break-away bracket 41 through a guide member 49, extending fore and aft in the part over and under the central part 41c of the bracket 41, and absorbing the impact energy while it is deformed by the movement of the bracket 41 to ahead of the vehicle relative to one part of the vehicle body. The upper plate part 71a2 of this energy absorbing plate 71 is held by the upper holding piece 49b1 of the guide member 49 being located with respect to the bracket 41.
