<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce gradation inversion and color change in a liquid crystal display device and to expand a good-vision area, specially, in a main visual-angle direction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell 1, a couple of polarizing elements 2 and 3 which are disposed across the liquid crystal cell 1, and a birefringent layer 4 which is interposed between the liquid crystal cell 1 and a lower (light-source side) polarizing element 3 and has a positive refractive-index elliptic body. The birefringent layer 4 has a relation nc>na≥nb, where na is the refractive index of the refractive-index elliptic body in an in-surface phase delay axis direction, nb the refractive index in a in-surface phase advancing axis direction, nc the refractive index in a thickness direction, and dp the thickness of the birefringent layer. Further, the retardation value of the birefringent layer in the thickness direction which is defined by (na-nc)×dp is set to -300 to <0 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
