PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project images of high quality free from irregular luminance and contrast reduction on a projection surface as a projection display device utilizing a reflective display element. SOLUTION: The projection display device comprises; a reflective display element 1; a light source system 2 for projecting illuminating light toward the reflective display element 1 from a direction inclined to one direction from a front surface direction of the reflective display element 1; a projection system 15 for projecting image beam emitted from the reflective display element 1 onto a projection surface; and a relay lens 14 which is arranged on the front surface side of the reflective display element 1 and corrects illuminating light which is made incident from a surface opposed to the light source system 2 and the projection system 15, into paralle beams being along a direction inclined at a prescribed angle from the front surface direction of the reflective display element 1 to make the parallel beams incident on the reflective display element 1 and makes image light emitted from the reflective display element 1, incident on the projection system 15 and emits light reflected by the surface opposed to the light source system and the projection system, out of illuminating light from the light source system 2 in directions other than the direction in which the image light is projected by the projection system 15.
