Disclosed is a method for producing a metallic honeycomb element (1) that comprises a plurality of smooth sheet metal foils (3) and at least partly structured sheet metal foils (2) and is disposed in a housing (4). The smooth sheet metal foils (3) have a first length (8) while the structured sheet metal foils (2) have a second length (7). The inventive method is characterized in that a difference between the first length (8) and the second length (7) is selected in accordance with a prestress (21).
