PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize bright image display by effectively utilizing illumination light emitted from a light source. SOLUTION: An image display device is provided with; a lighting device having a light source 24; a modulation element 31 which is illuminated by the lighting device and spatially modulates illumination light in accordance with a display image to transmit or reflect light; a projection lens which images the modulation element 31; and a first reflection element 6 which reflects unnecessary light which doesn't illuminate the modulation element 31, out of a luminous flux emitted from the lighting device toward the light source 24. The light source 24 is provided with a reflection mirror 16 of which a reflecting surface for reflecting light from a light emission point is a paraboloid and a protection glass 13 which is provided in the opening end side of the reflection mirror 7, and a second reflection element 14 for reflecting unnecessary light reflected by the first reflection element 6 is provided on one of front and rear side surfaces of the protection glass.
