A UMS(Unified Messaging System) comprising a picture data transferring function and a controlling method thereof are provided to store picture data and voice data through a PSTN, or on the Internet, and to variously combine the picture data with the voice data to correspond to each voice guide step, then to transmit the combined data to a video terminal, thereby sending the picture data as well as the voice data to a caller when an automatic relay function is carried out. An IP module(4) processes picture data or voice data. A DSP(5) converts analog PSTN message signals into digital signals to compress the converted signals, or performs a reverse process. A PSTN module(7) processes the digital PSTN message signals into PSTN signals in accordance with an internal format of a UMS(6). A CPU(9) stores voice and picture data signals inputted through the IP module(4) and the PSTN module(7) in a DB(8), combines a voice designated by a user with the picture data in various ways to transmit the combined data during an automatic relay, and overall controls functions of the UMS(6). A unified data manager(10) unifies contents blocks of the combined data into a virtual contents block capable of performing a voice recognition function, and stores the virtual contents block in the CPU(9).
