Apparatus for cutting and placing limp pieces of material is particularly constructed for relative positioning of two cut pieces (82, 118). The apparatus includes a vacuum conveyor (172) which holds an article component in a regular and secure position prior to and during placement of a cut piece (82) onto the component. In the apparatus and a method disclosed, a cut piece (82) is formed and transferred to a conveyor (172) on a single, constant speed anvil roll (167) without the need for intervening rolls.
