The device has a unit for selecting and engaging gear ratios (44). Three movable control fingers co-operate with four jaw clutches of control forks based on the engagement of the gear ratios. A movable selection carriage (4) has four shifting units that contact the jaw clutches when an engaged gear ratio returns to a neutral position to assure the engagement of the clutches with the gear ratios. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a gearbox having internal control device (b) a method of internal control of an automatic gear box.
