<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can realize a function not present in an original body side control program. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 which carries out printing by receiving printing data from a host 4 has a receiving means 11, a presence detecting means 12, and a shifting means 12. The receiving means 11 with an external connector 15 capable of setting and separating an external storage medium receives a control command sent out from the host 4 in the case where the external storage medium is set at the external connector 15. The presence detecting means 12 detects the presence of an external program stored in the external storage medium. The shifting means 12 shifts a control leadership to the external program from the body side control program after the external program is started by the received control command.
