The invention relates to a method and device for measuring any received light signal. The inventive device comprises a short pulse train high frequency generator (11). The temporal shape of each of said pulses has a known deterministic relationship with a temporal shape of the received light signal (13). Said device also comprises the short pulse train analyser (12) operating according to a periodic pulse analysing method and applying to periodic pulses an inverse relationship with respect to said deterministic relationship in such a way that the measure of the temporal shape of the received light signal (13) is provided, where by enabling the device to use the advantages and performance of a periodic pulse analyser (22).
