A device and a method are disclosed, for the treatment of a medium containing thread- and flake-forming microorganisms, such as effluent, clarifier sludge or similar, by means of at least one shear field (34) for treating the microorganisms in the medium with mechanical stress, whereby the at least one shear field (37) is defined and limited by a pair of planar elements (28, 32), separated from each other by a shear gap and which may be driven relative to each other by means of a drive device (30) to generate the shear field (34). One of the planar elements (32) comprises a medium inlet (38), provided for the introduction of the medium for treatment into the shear gap. The medium inlet (38) is or may be connected to a feed pump (14), such that the device (10) does not siphon with at least a reduction, or an avoidance of cavitation in the shear gap of the shear field (34). At least one of the planar elements (28, 32) comprises a surface structuring (76) on the inner face thereof, facing the other planar element (32, 28) which increases the energy dissipation. |
