METHOD FOR PREPARING 3-METHYLHEXADECANEDIOIC ACID AND ITS ESTERS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method for industrially feasibly preparing an optically active carbon in the l-muscone structure of the highest target for synthesis among animal derived natural musk perfumes by industrially feasibly constructing an optically active site with the use of an easily available raw material. SOLUTION: A method for preparing 3-methylhexadecanedioic acid comprises subjecting aβ-butyrolactone represented by formula (1) and an organomagnesium compound represented by formula (2) (wherein X is a halogen atom; n is an integer of 0-10; and the wavy line shows a cis and/or trans form of a double bond) in the presence of a copper compound represented by the formula: CuX1(wherein X1is a halogen atom) to ring-opening reaction to obtain an unsaturated carboxylic acid, and then oxidatively cleaving the double bond of this unsaturated carboxylic acid.
