An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) for improving characteristics in realization of a moving picture and a method of driving the LCD are provided to prevent deterioration of brightness by physically controlling a light source of backlight. An LCD panel outputs an image. A backlight unit(150) is installed at the back of the LCD panel and emits light to the LCD panel. A blocking line(170) is installed between the LCD panel and the backlight unit and selectively blocks the light emitted from the backlight unit. The LCD panel is comprised of a color filter substrate, an array substrate and a liquid crystal layer formed between the color filter substrate and the array substrate.
