An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) of a vertical alignment type is provided to secure a wide viewing angle and realize display of high contrast. A pair of substrates(20,30) are placed oppositely to each other. A plurality of electrodes(21,31), installed on the inside surfaces of the substrates, form a plurality of pixels(1) by regions opposite to each other. A liquid crystal device(100) of a vertical alignment type has a liquid crystal layer(10) placed between the substrates and made of liquid crystal material that has minus dielectric anisotropy by which a liquid crystal molecule is aligned vertically to the surfaces of the substrates. A pair of polarization plates(101,102) are placed at both sides of the liquid crystal device, respectively. Two lambda/4 plates(103,104) are placed between the liquid crystal device and each of the polarization plates, respectively.
