An image pickup apparatus and a controlling method are provided to detect a human face at a high speed from an image obtained by image pickup. An image pickup apparatus includes a pickup element(11), an attitude detection unit(14), and a feature extraction unit. The attitude detection unit detects an attitude of the image pickup apparatus. The feature extraction unit performs feature extraction from a subject in an image obtained based on an output from the pickup element. The feature extraction unit changes a method of the feature extraction from the subject based on attitude information detected by the attitude detection unit.
