PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a flat discharge tube of large size capable of making a discharge distance constant, capable of manufacturing within a short time, easy to automate, and having good productivity. SOLUTION: The flat discharge tube 51 is formed by arranging a plurality of spacers 32 in a light-emitting area between glass plates 54, 54. Afterwards, the spacers 32 are made to move to one end edge 2 of a discharging space 57 by putting the discharge tube in a vacuum container 34 and evacuating the container. Afterwards, the inner pressure of the vacuum container 34 is turned back to atmospheric pressure, and the spacers 32 are made to be held and fixed at one end edge of the discharge tube.
