The piston rod (1) has a section (3) with a coated or chromium plated surface. A collar (2) with a flange (4) is fitted on the surface to limit the travel of the rod. Independent claims are included for: (a) a shock absorber fitted with the piston rod; and (b) a method for making the piston rod.
