PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zirconia-based oxide higher in acid strength and acid content and more excellent in high-temperature stability. SOLUTION: The zirconia-based oxide is an oxide containing zirconium, aluminum, and sulfur. The zirconium and the aluminum are contained in such amounts that the former accounts for 92.0 to 99.6 mol% (as zirconium oxide), and the latter accounts for 0.4 to 8.0 mol% (as aluminum oxide), provided that the total is 100 mol%.
