<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and apparatus in which an appropriate correction amount limit value is automatically set in accordance with the luminance distribution of image data of a read original and tone correction can be performed, an image forming device equipped with the image processing apparatus, an image pickup device, and a computer program. <P>SOLUTION: A histogram creation part 71 creates a luminance histogram on the basis of a luminance signal, and a correction amount limit value setting part 72 calculates a correction amount reference value VI that is a feature amount indicating the distribution of luminance in the histogram, and sets an upper limit value and a lower limit value that are correction amount limit values, from the correction amount reference value VI. A tone correction characteristic calculation part 73 uses the upper limit value and the lower limit value to calculate a cumulative histogram and performs interpolation processing and normalization to create tone correction characteristics.
