PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the lowering of engine performance while preventing interference between an inlet valve and a piston in case where a variable mechanism fails and is locked, by controlling the other normal variable mechanism. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine comprises a variable valve timing mechanism 4 for changing a center phase of a lift operation angle of the inlet valve 2 toward an advance angle side or a delay angle side, a variable compression ratio mechanism 5 for changing an engine compression ratio by changing a stroke characteristic of the piston 7, a variable lifting mechanism 6 for controlling the increase and reduction of the lifting amount of the inlet valve, and an electronic controller 8 for controlling the mechanisms according to the engine operation state. The electronic controller is provided with a fail safe circuit that controls the piston stroke characteristic to reduce the engine compression ratio by the variable compression ratio mechanism and outputs a control signal for controlling to reduce the lifting amount of the inlet valve by the valve lifting mechanism to both of the normal mechanisms when an abnormality detection circuit determines that the operation of the variable valve timing mechanism is abnormal.
