The selected gear in the synchronized split section of the transmission unit is determined by keeping the engine revolutions close to a predetermined final level after engaging the main clutch. The difference to the real final revolution level is kept at a minimum by the selection of the heavy duty gear. The predetermined final revolution level is adjusted to the average value of revolutions used under normal working conditions.
