PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widen a dynamic range with the simplest configuration. SOLUTION: Each pixel of a MOS image sensor is reset at the time t1, and an output voltage is detected at the time t2 when one frame period T has elapsed. The value of the output voltage is monitored at the time t1+T/2<SP>n</SP>(n=3, 2, 1) in the middle of one frame. When the value is set so that it is reset again at the time t1-T/2<SP>n</SP>if it exceeds a half of a full range E, the value is reset again by a signal R5 to be D2 in case of a graph D1, it is reset again by a signal R4 to be C2 in case of a graph C1, and it is reset again by a signal R3 to be C2 in case of a graph B1, thus avoiding saturation at the time t2. The graph A is never reset again. Correction (shift in left for n bits) in accordance with an actual exposure time T/2<SP>n</SP>is performed to the detected value at the time t2, and proper output data corresponding to received light can be obtained.
