1,139,368. Stud and socket fastenings. SUD - AVIATION SOC. NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES. 15 April, 1966 [6 May, 1965], No. 16656/66. Heading E2B [Also in Division F2] A releasable connecting device comprises a substantially cylindrical pin 1, one end portion 1a of which is screw threaded for clamping purposes while the other 1b is so formed as to permit the said pin to be rotated by a tool a peripheral groove 1c being provided between said other end portion 1b extending through an axial passage of a tubular head 5 a portion of which is provided with radial housings 6 each of which contains a ball 7, the diameter of which is greater than the radial dimension of said housing, or or sleeve 8 surrounding said head and comprising a portion 8a of reduced internal diameter corresponding to the external diameter of the head portion which is provided with the radial housings, the sleeve being maintained by a spring 9, acting between 6 and 7 head and said sleeve in the position wherein the housings are masked by the portion of reduced diameter, so that the balls are engaged with the groove, the sleeve being movable against the bias of the spring to allow the balls to leave the groove to enable the head to be removed from the pin. In the construction shown, the groove 1c has a frustoconical side wall which as the head and pin are separated when the sleeve is in the releasing position moves the balls into the housings. One use for the connecting device described is for attaching a rocket missile to a supporting stand; the missile is connected to the stand by a number of the connecting devices the pins of the devices passing through holes in the stand and missile, the heads of the devices being on the underside of the stand and the screw threaded portions of the devices being engaged by nuts so that the missile is securely fixed to the stand; when the missile is to be released a release ring is moved so that it bears against all the sleeves simultaneously so releasing the heads and disconnecting the missile from the stand.
