The radio data system (12) receives input from an aerial and the input is in the form of up-to-date statements of traffic conditions. The data in digital form is received by a micro computer (1) that also receives input from a global positioning system (4) for use by the vehicle navigation system. This fixes the position of the vehicle on a route map shown on a display (5). A RAM memory is used to buffer the received traffic data and outputs are made to a loudspeaker (8). Road maps are provided on CD-ROM discs (15) and a keyboard allows the driver to enter a target destination and the relevant map is called and displayed.
