Organic peroxides are halogenated by treatment with the halogen (Cl2, Br2, F2 or I2) in the presence of partially halogenated peroxide under the catalytic action of light; the partially halogenated peroxide may be obtained by treating the peroxide with a mixture of halogen and hydrogen halide. The process may be carried out continuously in stages by the cascade method, the partially halogenated peroxide which acts as diluent for the fresh peroxide being formed in the first stage. Specified peroxides are tert.-butyl peroxide, hydroperoxide and perbenzoate, and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. |
